Paul Doiron’s new novel is terrific

I’ve enjoyed all of Paul Doiron’s novels, and I found his new novel, One Last Lie, to be particularly engaging. I was especially pleased to obtain the book while we were stuck at home due to the corona virus. Paul’s novel provided great entertainment for several days.

This novel has many interesting and compelling characters in the story that is intriguing and will keep you reading to find out what happens, right up to the final page.

Paul’s main character is Maine game warden Mike Bowditch, who heads into northern Maine in search of Charley, an elderly man who leaves his wife and home to search for a game warden who disappeared 15 years ago. The story starts when Charlie finds a badge that belonged to the missing warden on a table at an outdoor sale in Machias.

As an aside, Linda and I have enjoyed those Machias roadside sales quite often on our way to Lubec.

As Bowditch searches the small towns and forests of Aroostook County, the story gets much more complicated and yes, there is plenty of murder and mayhem. Eventually several of the key characters, including Bowditch, end up on an island in a northern Maine river, all with guns.

The cover photo of a guy paddling a river at sunset is stunning.

I really love the way Paul captures the Maine we all love. And he never seems to run out of great plots. As one quote on the back of the book says, Doiron writes with elegance, authority, and passion.

That’s true but what I really love about his books are his characters and plots, which are very compelling. I guarantee you will enjoy One Last Lie.
