Maine Audubon is again sponsoring a brook trout survey this year. The information collected is very important to our effort to protect and enhance our remarkable population of native brook trout.
I hope you will sign up to participate in this year’s survey. Here is the information I received from Maine Audubon.
Happy Spring! It’s time to go fishing. And we need your help.
We are ready for another season of the Brook Trout Survey Project and looking forward to working with you on what will surely be another great season of finding Maine’s wild brook trout!
A big thank you to all of our returning volunteers and a big welcome to new volunteers who are joining the survey!
We encourage you to sign up early for the pond or stream you would like to survey. To find a pond or stream that interests you, visit the website at www.tumaine.org/brooktrout.htm, select a pond or stream and let us know what you have chosen. We will update the list periodically to reflect this.
You can survey alone or with a buddy (preferred if you are going somewhere remote). The best time to complete coastal stream surveys is April through mid-June and the best time to complete pond surveys is May through mid-July and again in September. However, surveys can be completed any time between ice-out and September 30.
More information about the pond and stream surveys including the 2019 lists, volunteer materials, maps, and more can be found at www.tumaine.org/brooktrout.htm.
Please feel free to contact Jeff Reardon, Brook Trout Project Director, Trout Unlimited JReardon@tu.org, (207) 615-9200 with any questions. Please contact Maine Audubon, brooktrout@maineaudubon.org, or call Beth Pauls at (207) 781-2330 x273 to sign up for ponds or streams you would like to survey. It’s going to be a great season!
Sincerely,
Sally Stockwell
