1991 legislature killed these bills

The other night I was reading a July 1991 edition of The Maine Sportsman, when I came across a column from the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine listing the legislative bills the group helped to defeat that session.

I found this list to be quite interesting and I want to share with you today. Here it is.

LD 97, An act to prohibit shooting from or across an accepted road. (You probably know that eventually this did become law).

LD 816, An act to promote safety in hunting. This would have prohibited hunting within 1000 feet of dwelling.

LD 965, An act to require hunters to wear fluorescent orange in all hunting seasons (even duck season).

LD 1416, An act to require all watercraft used on inland waters to have Maine registrations.

LD 1616, An act to amend the laws concerning hunting on private property. The non-hunters rights alliance proposed a sign reversal program.

LD 543, An act prohibiting the driving or parking of vehicles on ice covered bodies of water.

There was one bill cited in the report which was enacted. It was LD 589, An act to establish a crime and penalty for killing a person while hunting. After a lady was killed in her backyard by a deer hunter, Representative Paul Jacques sponsored this legislation which essentially requires deer hunters to see an entire deer before they shoot.
